THE FLOWERS
The moment your flowers arrive the sense of excitement really fills your body. You have dreamt of this day over and over again. You have worked through to the day to the very last detail. You have visualised your bouquet time and time again and suddenly it is in your hands and you are standing at the church entrance, flowers adorning every nook and cranny. This is your moment.

Alright, a bit melodramatic but this is real in some sense as flowers can really make your day special. Whether it be the aroma of fresh hyacinth or the stunning colours of tulips or the simple beauty of roses, flowers can say so much at a wedding.

Fresh flowers add a touch of romance to the day. We use flowers in every day life to mark occasions - birthdays, anniversaries, births and we attach sentiment to them so flowers at a wedding are the ultimate romantic accessory.

THE WEDDING ROSE

The Rose is always going to be the most popular flower for weddings as they signify romance and the thing with roses is they come in practically any colour you want so there is sure to be a rose to suit your wedding from overblown tea roses for a summer marquee wedding to tight buds which are perfect to group together for a compact hand-tied bouquet.

THE PICK OF THE BUNCH

Flowers are always beautiful but it is the florist that can really make or break a wedding. So stick to manandwife.co.uk's advice and you are sure to find a blooming good florist who really is the pick of the bunch.

Start with recommendations. Friends and family are a good place to begin but remember Aunty Mabel's taste in flowers may be very different from yours. Also ask at the venue as they may have an in-house florist but do not be pressured into using them unless you are completely satisfied they are the perfect choice. The Venue may have a list of florists in the area who are familiar with the venue so contact them as well.

Now you've got a list of florists, pay each of them a visit. Perhaps at first just visit the shop itself as you can tell a lot by the shops design and stock. A good florist will have a portfolio you can browse through and then you can tell whether it is worth booking a consultation.

Before you go to consultations gather together as much information as you can take, fabric swatches, a picture of the dress, any flowers you like the look of to give the florist an idea of what you want.

A BUDGET BUNCH

Flowers tend to cost more than you expect so have a budget set but talk through with each florist what they can offer for that budget and see what suggestions they make. When thinking about a budget remember that wiring work will add to the cost so if you are on a budget stick to an informal hand-tied posy choosing seasonal flowers to keep costs to a minimum. Also remember that flowers are more expensive around occasions such as Valentines, mothers Day and Christmas.

HOW BLOOMING MUCH?

A good florist will send a quote to you detailing all costs so make sure you clarify this includes delivery r any other charges. Also a good florist will not expect any form of deposit until you are satisfied with the quote and to secure your date you can expect to pay approximately 20-25% of the full cost.

PETAL PREDICTIONS

The Flower Gurus at the Flowers & Plants Association (020 7738 8044) predict that 2002 is going to be the year for Anemones. They think the distinctive shape and strong colours will make the Anemone the red-hot flower of the year and perfect for Brides wanting to make a real statement.
