| MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT | Music plays such an important part at most weddings from the start to the finish. The sound of the organ as you walk down the aisle, a string quartet playing as you sign the register, a jazz band entertaining your guests as they await the wedding breakfast, background music whilst your eating, the first dance and then boogying the night away.
Music can create a romantic atmosphere, it can act as an icebreaker and fill awkward silences and also help people let their hair down!!
| CHURCH CHORUS
Music in a church can be so overwhelming to choose when most of us have no idea what they are called. Will the vicar know which tune is your tiddledeoppopps. The organist will probably play a selection of appropriate tunes as your guests are arriving unless you specifically know what you are after.
Here comes the Bride, or should we say The Wedding March by Mendelssohn is a traditional entrance to accompany you skipping down the aisle and another popular choice is The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by Handel which was used in Four Weddings & a Funeral. Of course there is no written rule that you have music and you are not obliged to use the organist and you could opt for a string quartet which is slightly softer.
| HUMMING HYMNS
Not all churches have choirs nowadays but many offer the service and it can really create atmosphere and take away the embarrassment of most of the congregation not knowing the words and lip-synching. It is up to you and the vicar but usually two or three hymns are included in the service and the minister will advise on what they consider appropriate.
| BE CIVIL
A major factor in having musicians at your civil ceremony is the size available so check with your register office or venue. If there is not room it is likely they will provide you with CD facilities so you can have whatever music you like playing. There are even CD's specially compiled for weddings.
Again think logically with your music. Try and think of the acoustics at your venue and as said before the size of your venue. There is no point booking a big band for a small church hall and you don't want the musicians to over power the day, they should blend into the surroundings and not be a focal point.
Check with the venue if there are any noise limits in place, perhaps the venue is in a residential area and there are limits on decibels or a time you have to be finished by.
Booking musicians is a difficult task so try and talk to others and get recommendations. Many musicians will send you demo tapes or invite you to gigs they are playing.
