THE CAKE
It would seem Cakes, along with everything else to do with weddings have seen a change to the traditional white wedding cake adorned with flowers. Even choosing a cake requires many decisions and there is so much available to you, you need to have in your mind what you want. So here are a few things for you to ponder on.

FRUITCAKE, SPONGE CAKE, CHOCOLATE CAKE OR FAIRY CAKE

The choice is yours. Tradition leans toward the fruit cake. Although if you really wanted to be traditional then copy the Ancient Romans who baked a cake of wheat or barely and broke it over the bride's head as a symbol of her fertility. It is said that guests would then eat the crumbs as a sign of good luck but lets hope they did not pick them out of the Bride's hair. Yuk. How this was a symbol of fertility we just don't know and quite frankly crumbs in your hair and really not the done thing at a modern wedding.

STACK 'EM UP

In medieval times, the guests would bring cakes as wedding gifts. Aren't you thankful we have wedding lists nowadays? The cakes were then stacked as high as possible and the bride and groom had to try and kiss leaning across the cakes. If they caught a snog this was thought to symbolise a lifetime of prosperity.

Nowadays we have become far more civilised, perhaps for fear of getting icing all over the dress, and cakes are tiered.

So, Aunty Mabel may will be expecting fruit cake but many people opt for a sponge cake which is a little lighter on the stomach after a full day of wedding food.

CHOCOHOLICS

And the Brits love for chocolate is spreading to the wedding and chocolate cakes are becoming more and more popular along with a tower of fairy cakes.

DECORATION

Many brides opt for flowers handcrafted in icing to match the flower theme of the wedding but the list is endless to what is on offer. Whatever you want they can make it out of icing. To keep the cost down, perhaps opt for fresh flowers or petals scattered over the cake.
